Ellie Ellie was born in Toronto and has been working as a journalist for 25 years. She studied sociology at the University of Toronto before landing her first job at Children's Aid as a case worker with foster children. She joined The Toronto Star in 1977 after freelancing and working toward her masters' degree in sociology. She has worked as a general reporter, and as Editor of the Life, Food, Fashion and Home sections, as well as Sunday editor at the newspaper. From 1995 until this summer, Ellie applied her interest in sociology as a Star columnist focusing on social justice issues. During this time, she also penned a relationship column (under a pseudonym) for Metro Toronto, the city's commuter paper, formerly known as Metro Today. In 1999, she published her first book The Dionnes, which was on the bestseller list and sold out in hard cover and paperback. Today she is a columnist at The Star, and is happily married with two adult children and three adult stepchildren.
