Race-car driving is more than just a sport; it is a way of life — and not just for drivers, but for their fans, too.

Stockcar Toons is a once-a-week NASCAR-themed cartoon drawn and captioned by Mike Smith, editorial cartoonist for the Las Vegas Sun. Since its launch in 1999, Stockcar Toons has proven to be popular with NASCAR fans, professional race-car drivers, pit crew members, sponsors and newspaper readers across the country.

Stockcar Toons completely captures the passion, personalities and ironies of America’s fastest-growing spectator sport. From extreme fan enthusiasm to such controversial topics as NASCAR governance issues and driver rivalries, Mike Smith applies the keen eye of an editorial cartoonist to this high-speed, high-stakes, intensely competitive and mechanically complicated sport.

Stockcar Toons is a great choice for seizing the attention of dedicated auto racing fans. Considering the explosive growth of NASCAR and the attractive demographics of the average NASCAR fan, associating your newspaper with something that has such a huge base of loyal fans will provide a strong return for your investment.

Stockcar Toons currently appear in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, St. Petersburg Times, The Detroit News and Daytona Beach News-Journal.

Rev up your sports or automotive coverage with Stockcar Toons, the only cartoon to celebrate the intensity and enthusiasm of NASCAR fans.

Mike Smith
Mike Smith started drawing Stockcar Toons as a result of his interest in NASCAR racing. He knew that he wanted to be a professional cartoonist the instant he saw how much trouble his cartoons created when they appeared in his college newspaper, the Los Angeles Loyolan.

Born in San Francisco in 1960, Smith earned his bachelor’s degree in humanities from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles in 1982. After graduation, Smith honed his skills by day and pumped gas by night for National Car Rental at Los Angeles International Airport. The following year he won first place in the Tribune Company Syndicate’s Campus Cartoon Contest. In 1983, he was hired by the Las Vegas Sun as their staff editorial cartoonist.

Smith has won several awards from the Nevada Press Association and placed second two years in a row for "Best Editorial Cartoons" at the National Headliner Awards. Casino owners, senators, celebrities, Bill Clinton and even the Pope have asked for originals of his work.

Smith’s second collection, "Stockcar Toons 2," was published in March 2003.
