1985 CAMARO 'Z-28' IROC-Z
A PERFORMANCE CAR WITH HI-TECH ELECTRONIC SOPHISTICATION

"Open the hood and the first thing you see is the big silver (aluminum) air plenum changer glistening in the light. Long tuned (aluminum) runners extend from both sides like a pipe organ, atomizing engine fuel and ramming it directly into the combustion chamber.

"This is Camaro Z-28's Tuned-Port Fuel Injection system. Neat plumbing and wiring pay fastidious tribute to its serious design.

"Here is engine technology so advanced that an electronic control module continually measures air mass, altitude, ambient temperature, barometric pressure and humidity. Then adjusts the pulse duration of eight Bosch injectors with computer accuracy."

The 1985 Camaro sales catalog continued its description of the under-hood activity, citing the impressive torque and horsepower gains. There was "instant throttle response," "impressive smoothness and power at any speed, in any weather, at any elevation,improved breathing for power at high RPM."

Dependable operation: The only moving parts in fuel system were the throttle plate, idle controls and the electronic fuel injectors.

This Camaro V-8 engine required no choke or carburetor, and the e.f.i. performance was further assured by an automatic air conditioning shut-off at full throttle, for better acceleration.

Should the engine run out of gas, a self-pressurizing fuel system provided easy restarting without having to "prime the pump." Moreover, there was an automatic idle increase when accessories were in use, to help maintain battery charge. And the self-adjusting idle helped to prevent stalling when engine was cold, or fuel waste when hot.

The top-line "IROC-Z" Camaro is illustrated. Also available were the lower-priced Sport Coupe, or mid-line Berlinetta, each with a grille design that differed from that of the IROC-Z.

The IROC-Z was the only '85 Camaro with a front air dam. The rear deck spoiler was standard on IROC-Z, optional on Sport Coupe or Berlinetta.

The fuel tank held 16.2 gallons on the IROC-Z, 15.5 gallons on the other models.

Considering its status as a performance car, the price of the Camaro has always been quite reasonable.
